Synopsis

In this last episode of the Disappearing… series, Ding Yi Music Company invites audiences on a poignant journey through time, where chamber music breathes life into vanishing traditions. Dedicated to honouring traditional arts and trades that are gradually fading in modern Singapore, the Disappearing… series preserves their legacy through music and storytelling.

This immersive concert weaves melodies with the artistry of three traditional crafts—lion dance head-making, rattan weaving, and Malay songkok crafting—each carrying generations of heritage and meaning. These time-honoured skills embody the spirit and cultural depth of their artisans, brought to life through multimedia presentations. Audiences will experience the intricate and sacred art of lion head-making, the delicate and distinctive nature of rattan weaving, and the rhythmic grace and historical significance of Malay craftsmanship.

As Chinese chamber music tells the heartfelt stories of these artisans and their unwavering dedication, the concert serves as a poignant call to remembrance, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a testament to the resilience of tradition. In the ever-changing tides of time, music carves out a space for these fading arts to endure, ensuring their beauty continues to shine for generations to come.

The featured artisans are Henry Ng (lion dance head-making), Chen Foon Kee (rattan weaving) and Hj Abdul Wahab Bin Abdullah (Malay songkok crafting).

This programme is commissioned by SCCC as part of Cultural Extravaganza 2025. Please visit singaporen.sg/ce for more information.

Synopsis

Curated by Ding Yi Music Company’s concertmaster Fred Chan Hong Wei, with Hu Yu, renowned banhu virtuoso and professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, as Artistic Advisor, Ding Yi’s Chamber Classics – Earth: Unheard invites audiences to experience the intricacy and refinement of Chinese chamber music, evoking a sense of deep stillness after all things have settled.

Like chamber music itself—delicate yet profound—the concert presents works by outstanding artists inspired by folklore, mythology, and native traditions. Each note resonates with human emotions and the vastness of nature, sparking imagination and reflection.

The programme features all premiere works, including the premiere of Barong Dance (Chinese chamber music version), a sheng solo composed by Wang Chenwei and performed by Ding Yi sheng musician Soh Swee Kiat. Artistic Advisor Hu Yu will present the banhu solo Polyphonic Returns, along with his own composition, Echoes of the Mountain having its world premiere, guiding audiences to hear the voices of the earth and explore a deeper connection to nature and humanity.

Through the intricate beauty of Chinese chamber music, Earth: Unheard paints a musical canvas of cultural and natural landscapes, revealing the raw and timeless power of sound, and inviting audiences to uncover the untold stories and meanings within.

There will be an Arts Chat after the concert, conducted in Chinese.

Synopsis

Ding Yi Music Company opens the 2025/26 season with “Traversing”, a concert that bridges ancient and modern, East and West, promising a night of breathtaking artistry.

Led by Ding Yi’s Chief Artistic Mentor Tsung Yeh and Resident Conductor Wong De Li, Dedric, the ensemble presents a rich tapestry of Chinese chamber music classics and innovations, including “Glory” by renowned composer Wang Jian-min, a piece specially commissioned for Ding Yi’s 15th anniversary.

Joining the stage is William Wei, laureate of the prestigious 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. With masterful technique and expressive depth, he will perform “Violin Concerto No. 1” by Zhao Jiping, newly adapted by Cultural Medallion recipient Law Wai Lun, alongside Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso Op. 28”, arranged by celebrated local composer Phoon Yew Tien. Blending Chinese and Western traditions, these works promise an unforgettable musical journey.

The concert also features the world premiere of the chamber adaptation of “Rama”, composed by Young Artist Award recipient Wang Chenwei and performed by Ding Yi pipa musician Chua Yew Kok. Inspired by the 2,000-year-old Indian epic Rāmāyaṇa, this evocative work brings to life the trials and triumphs of Prince Rama through the expressive timbre of the pipa.

Join us in a concert where every note traverses time and tradition as we create the classics of tomorrow!

“Mr. Wei … proved to be a virtuoso, but a special and sensitive interpreter at the same time.”                                                                                                                                       — WestDeutsche Zeitung
